It’s really an impressive view of New York from the Standard Hotel! Especially for those in the hotel club, the Boom Boom Room. The view of Manhattan from the restroom on the 18th floor is unbeatable thanks to the 3m tall windows. Unfortunately for those using the loo, these windows work both ways.
There’s a view to be had from both sides of these floor-to-ceiling hotel windows. If passer-byers crane their necks up they may catch a glimpse of someone using the loo, totally oblivious. Imagine you minding your own business while doing your business at your New York hotel, only to notice someone outside on the street waving at you!
Turns out the hotel windows work both ways, particularly in the public washrooms on the 18th floor. Some say design flaw but others (read: exhibitionists and voyeurs) are taking advantage of it. Many visitors to the adjacent High Line Park are getting more than just views of the Hudson River and Manhattan! It’s not uncommon to catch guests getting in and out of the shower, using the loo and even enjoying “private” moments with their significant others.
Free peep show?
There are more than a few who don’t approve of the hotel’s windows that show guests bearing all whether they know it or not.
David Langdon, 55 from Australia, told the Daily News,
“The view outside is exciting, but the view inside is frightening. I saw people waving at me. Sitting on the royal throne, you don’t expect a public viewing.”
It tuns out that the washroom waist-high curtains had been removed temporarily for renovations but afterwards the hotel failed to put them back up.
