It’s a region famous for its meat production, but the new mayor of Turin vowed this week to promote vegetarian and vegan diets – and it’s caused some controversy.

Turin’s recently elected mayor, Chiara Appendino, said this week that one of her priorities will be to promote a vegetarian and vegan diet. A move which has ruffled quite a few feathers in the meat producing region of Piedmont, where meat dishes have formed part of the area’s tradition for many years.

Writing in a manifesto, Appendino stated that the move was to benefit health, the environment and animals. It has led some to speculate as to whether Turin could in fact become Italy’s first vegetarian city.
