Firefighters struggled last week to keep raging wildfires along the Adriatic coast and Croatia’s islands contained at the height of the country’s tourist season.
Two major forest fires have been blazing across the Peljesac peninsula, forcing villages to evacuate and destroying large areas of vineyards, pine forests and olive groves.
Another fire in Istria, near the Učka mountain, has also been challenging Croatia’s firefighters. Main roads have been cut off and power supplies are down in some places. Fires also sparked on the islands of Korcula and Brac.
Hot winds have been pushing the local firefighters efforts to their limits. With the support of airplanes and helicopters, the fires are in control now but the damage is considerable and as the summer temperatures continue, more wildfires could be in the forecast.
