It was only last week we were admiring the best ferris wheels around the world. Looks like we’ll have to amend our post as Dubai will soon be home to the world’s biggest observation wheel.
We’re pretty sure that Dubai will soon get its own World Record for being home to so many record-breaking buildings, attractions and the like. Here’s another one for Dubai’s record book. Plans to build the world’s largest ferris wheel have just been approved as part of a new tourist complex.
Of course, they have to name it the Dubai Eye.
The Dubai Eye will be 210 metres tall, a whole 64 metres taller than the Singapore Flyer, and offer passengers the most spectacular views of Dubai’s coastline and the Burj Al Arab. The ferris wheel will be part of the Bluewaters Island project near Jumeirah Beach which will include entertainment areas, shops, restaurants and a promenade souq for cheaper shopping and bargaining. As for hotels, a 5-star establishment is also in the plans.
The Dubai Eye
- Height: 210 metres tall
- Cost: an estimated 1 billion dirhams
- Inspired by: the London Eye of course!
- Opening date: sometime in 2014
Are you just itching to get up on the world’s tallest ferris wheel? It’ll be another three years before it’s finished with ground-breaking planned for this April. Dubai isn’t the only city planning for a big wheel however. Las Vegas is building a 167-metre tall one called The High Roller (obviously), part of The Linq, this year. New York also has plans for one near the Staten Island Ferry but it won’t be built until 2014.
Round and round: world’s best ferris wheelsHave you been on a ferris wheel? Which one?
