After a long marketing campaign, “Love is in the Air”, and with more than 80 000 votes, a German couple was chosen by the Scandinavian airline SAS to be the first same-sex couple ever married at 10 000m altitude.
Aleksandar Mijatovic and Shantu Bhattacherjee will seal the deal on December 6th, 2010 on a flight to New York from Stockholm. The happy couple will spend their honeymoon in both New York and West Hollywood in Los Angeles.
In second place a gay couple from the USA won a dream wedding at Sweden’s famous ICEHOTEL.
Every good competition has a surprise twist at the end, SAS decided that not only a gay couple should get an in-flight wedding but a lesbian one too. So Polish couple Eva Tomaszewicz and Gosia Rawinska (who were a close second in votes) will also be married in the skies in December.
More than 300 couples submitted applications for the contest. The winning German couple won with the most amount of votes (81 640 to be exact) for their unconditional love: “After seven years, I still have butterflies in my stomach when I look at him. And I love the fact that I always feel that I am in a team and that I can rely on him and trust him unconditionally.” says Aleksandar.
With this campaign, SAS has reached an estimated 100 million people around the world and created at least 500 000 links thanks to the couple’s ambitious social media campaign to win the prize. It has been without a doubt the most popular communications campaign to this day in the airline industry. For more info, check out flysas.com/love.
