A cheeky little chihuahua caused quite the stir at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when he triggered a luggage screening alert. Too cute to travel?

Last week New York’s LaGuardia security staff were in for quite a surprise when a black, hard-sided suitcase set off the security alarm bells for unknown contents, signalling staff to open it up and investigate. The bag had been checked by its owner.

An officer opened up the case, to find a seven-year-old beige and tan chihuahua curled up inside. According to TSA, the owner said she had no idea her dog had crawled up inside while she was packing for her flights to Los Angeles.

Unfortunately the pup couldn’t travel with its owner to California, so the passenger’s husband was called to come and pick up their dog at the airport. The TSA made light of the situation by posting a pic of the pup on its Instagram feed with the caption:

“Ay, #chihuahua! It’s always important to double check your bags before travelling, especially to make sure your chihuahua hasn’t stowed away inside one of them.”

It’s nice to bring your pet along for the ride, but remember that they don’t belong in checked luggage. Remember that story about a boy who tried to smuggle his pet turtle onboard? He put his turtle inside a KFC hamburger, hoping security wouldn’t notice his lunch had legs and a tail!
